"ABC News Exclusive: Murder in a Teapot
January 26, 2007 12:11 PM
Brian Ross and Maddy Sauer Report:
British officials say police have cracked the murder-by-poison case of former spy Alexander Litvinenko, including the discovery of a "hot" teapot at London's Millennium Hotel with an off-the-charts reading for Polonium-210, the radioactive material used in the killing.
A senior official tells ABC News the "hot" teapot remained in use at the hotel for several weeks after Litvinenko's death before being tested in the second week of December. The official said investigators were embarrassed at the oversight.
The official says investigators have concluded, based on forensic evidence and intelligence reports, that the murder was a "state-sponsored" assassination orchestrated by Russian security services.
Officials say Russian FSB intelligence considered the murder to have been badly bungled because it took more than one attempt to administer the poison. The Russian officials did not expect the source of the poisoning to be discovered, according to intelligence reports.
Russian officials continue to deny any involvement in the murder and have said they would deny any extradition requests for suspects in the case.
Sources say police intend to seek charges against a former Russian spy, Andrei Lugovoi, who met with Litvinenko on Nov. 1, the day officials believe the lethal dose was administered in the Millennium Hotel teapot.
Lugovoi steadfastly denied any involvement in the murder at a Moscow news conference and at a session with Scotland Yard detectives. Russian security police were present when the British questioned Lugovoi, and British officials do not think they received honest answers from him.
British health officials say some 128 people were discovered to have had "probable contact" with Polonium-210, including at least eight hotel staff members and one guest.
None of these individuals has yet displayed symptoms of radiation poisoning, and only 13 individuals of the 128 tested at a level for which there is any known long-term health concern, officials said.
The Millennium Hotel has closed the Pine Bar and other areas where Litvinenko and Lugovoi met on Nov. l, although the hotel says the remaining public areas "have been officially declared safe" and are open to the public.

Dmitry Medvedev a friend of Putin's and the highest government official after Putin himself is in charge of the national projects. The state television reported how he has carried out his report to the Duma on the progress of the national projects. Based citing of number such as 3500 new school buses he mentioned that without new roads these buses wouldn't last long. While there is a lot of positive being said it is amazing how mute and subservient the Duma has become. Even the fervent Zhirinovsky with his LDRP nationalist party didn't ask a word about what is being done to curtail the expansion of governments bureaucracy and the absence of any kind of oversight in the national project.
The problem is that without any sort of checks and balances, the national projects are nothing more then government handouts and will not create education, health care and agricultural systems that are sustainable, not dependent on the government and are able to evolve and reverse the grave demographic situation in Russia.

So basically Putin with his grip on Duma and every government structure felt bad about this huge consolidation of power in his hands and thus decided to give something back. Only he couldnt really give power so he merely created the illusion of public oversight with the Public Chamber. Having stifled all ability of the parliament to speak out against his policies and lacking any kind of independent advice the President thinks that the Public Chamber will fill the void. The problem is that not only has it shown to be another lame duck institution, it only has a few people out of 146 which know how to speak out against anything. The only public benefit derived from this whole exercise was the mediation it did between Moscow authorities and people who occupied and refused to give up their homes in the outskirts of Moscow so that Lushkov's wife could build more new Russian projects.

it makes one very distressed at the ruling party's apathy and the whole lack of any kind of societal involvement in running of the country. The elites behave themselves in any way they choose fit, the population is stripped of its constitutional rights. Case in point the recent law about the movement of the constitutional court of the Russian federation shows the utter disregard and disrespect for the constitution in this country. The federation council issued a law moving the court to St.Petersburg without even consulting the court judges! Imagine if congress all of a sudden decided to move the Supreme Court to Chicago away from Washington and then didn't even ask the Supreme Court judges about what they thought, this would never happen in an actual democracy but in a quazy authoritarian oligarchical system that is Russia none cares about the constitutional court and the farther away from Moscow they are the better! the law was put on hold pending consultation from the judges but its even suggestion shows the condition of the so called democracy in Russia.
it is also scary to think what is going to happen in 2008 when obviously the government is preparing for massive fraud and vote rigging by disallowing all rights of assembly 2 weeks prior and after the elections. the fun is just began.

It's amazing how Russia loves to irk America!
Even after Iran threatening to wipe Israel off the map and develop nuclear weapons (both condemned by the United Nations) Russia sells the most sophisticated short range air defense systems to Iran. These systems are capable of :"It is designed to protect targets from attack at all times and in any weather, not only by shooting down attacking aircraft but also by destroying any munitions before they reach their target. It is air-portable and equipped with NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) protection."
Last night (1/16/07)
- Talked about the abolition of 5 political parties that did not reach the 50,000 registered members fresh hold that is set by the election law. The first victims are Eurasian Union, People’s Republican Party, Nature and Society Party of Regions Development, Social Protection Party and Union of People for Education and Science. The new story focused on the way that all these alleged parties registered the mentally ill, the deceased etc. they even had a reporter interview a bunch of old babushkas (grandmas) that were tricked into registering as republicans! (god forbid they didn't even know what it stood for).
Kremlin's message: Join our approved parties or we close you down.
- Next story was about how the newly rich Russians are buying apartments in the tallest new building in Melbourne Australia! (you never hear about such stuff on CNN or Fox News!)
- Next story was about how a tax official got busted trying to extort 5 million dollars bribe in cash to take care of tax problem for a company. The company notified the FSB and they set up a sting, whats amazing is that it shows you how big the problem is when it costs $5mil to bribe a simple tax official!
- Another story on Putin meeting some governor of a far away province and listening to the governor talk about how great Putin is and how his national projects are making a difference for teachers, doctors etc. Putin ofcourse says how much more must be done in the sphere. (All looks and feels very fake, staged and sad, just like Putin himself.)
